The excerpts on the process and benefits of Profile based short-listing shared by Prof. Kulkarni are given below:

Two phases of assessment at SPJIMR
Short-listing happens in two phases at SPJIMR. In both phases short listing is done basis profiles, the criteria do not change.

Phase-1
In the first phase applicants are shortlisted on the basis of their profiles alone. They are also expected to meet the qualifying scores in at least one of the entrance exams as a qualifier to be eligible for interviews. Applicants shortlisted in the first list are called for an early interview.

Phase-2
The second phase is held after the availability of entrance test scores. Applicants in this phase are called for interviews on basis of their profile, along with their performance in the entrance tests.

Key criteria to shortlist candidates on the basis of profile
Profiles are shortlisted on the following basis

  1. Consistency of academic record
  2. Relevance of work experience for the specialization
  3. Versatility & Achievements.

Profiles are shortlisted basis various factors such as consistency of academic record and relevance of work experience for the chosen specialization. Versatility as well as achievements outside of academics is considered.

Both intellectual readiness (academics) and emotional readiness are key factors assessed. Emotional readiness includes work experience, extra-curricular activities and aptitude for and befitting the Institute’s mission of promoting value-based leadership.

When applying, MBA aspirants need to keep in mind that we look for aspirants who are grounded; team oriented and have the desire to make a difference.

Profile based short listing advantageous for the candidates
Early interviews are convenient for students because it avoids overlapping with other interview calls during the admissions season.

To the Institute, it gives an opportunity to stagger interviews and ensure that the interview process remains robust.

A candidate who has a strong profile but has not done very well in the entrance exam also gets a chance to appear for the interview process if he/she is shortlisted and has a score which is higher than qualifying scores.

Minimum score mandatory
Meeting the minimum cut off for the entrance test scores is a mandatory requirement for the interview process if shortlisted. The final selection depends on the candidate’s composite score.
