MBAUniverse.com: What was your overall preparation strategy for CAT 2016/ XAT 2017?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): My preparation was very straightforward. I referred to videos by Hitbullseye on YouTube. Then later on, I enrolled for Times test series. I would ensure that I take at least 2 mock tests in a week in the last run-up to CAT like a month back. I would like to reiterate that attempting mock tests is imperative if one wants to score well in CAT. And most importantly, I devoted equal time to all the three sections and this enabled me to score equally well in all three sections.
MBAUniverse.com: Please share your sectional preparation strategy for CAT 2016/XAT 2017? How did you prepare for each section VARC, DILR, Quant? What study materials and books did you use?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): For VARC, I installed GRE flash card app to ameliorate my vocabulary. For DILR, I practiced vigorously. For DI , I practiced about 10 sets a day and improved my calculation speed without resorting to a calculator. For Quant, I began with simpler question with simultaneously building on concepts and then gradually moved to more complex problems. This way, I was able to augment my accuracy along with speed.
MBAUniverse.com: Was there any particular section that you were weak at? How did you overcome this challenge?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): During the nascent stage of my preparation, I would face some difficulty while solving DILR problems. But rigorous practice in this section turned the tide for me and I was able to score handsomely on the D-day.
MBAUniverse.com: How can candidates use Mock tests better? What is your advice?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): Spending more that 4-5 hours on analysis is paramount and dont forget to refer to the solutions of questions which you have attempted correctly as this enables you to go through better alternatives if there are any.
MBAUniverse.com: Did you go to offline coaching centre? What role does a coaching centre play?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): I didn't. I only went for offline centers post my CAT for gdpi preparation.
MBAUniverse.com: Other than CAT, which exam did you appear?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): I didn't appear for XAT. I appeared for IIFT, NMAT, SNAP, MHCET.
MBAUniverse.com: Which institutes did you apply for admission and which institutes offered you admission?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): I applied to SIBM, IIFT, NMIMS, IIMs, IRMA, SP JAIN, MDI, NITIE, SJMSOM. I converted NMIMS, IRMA, IIM Udaipur, Nagpur, Kashipur, Rohtak, Amritsar, Ranchi. Didn't sit for interviews in MDI and NITIE.
MBAUniverse.com: Please share your strategy for the CAT Day. What was your last-minute preparation? How did you plan your CAT/XAT test taking?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): For CAT, last two days before the exams were reserved for brushing up the concepts and going through my notes and I made it a point that I slept for 8 hours in the night before the exam.
MBAUniverse.com: Which B-school you decided upon and why?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): IRMA was my first and last choice.
70% of Indians reside in rural areas, so I sensed a lot of opportunity for my career. Post 2014, the new political dispensation was very much focused on delivering adequate services in the rural sector and made this area very exciting to work with. This acted as a great pull factor for me.
MBAUniverse.com: How did you prepare for IRMASAT? Please share your strategy? How much did you score in it?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): My strategy was quite straightforward. I referred to online sources about policies and acts promulgated by the Central govt during the last one year. Apart from that, I brushed basic current affairs especially pertaining to public policy and governance. I scored 29 on 40 marks
MBAUniverse.com: What would you suggest to IRMA aspirants to prepare for IRMASAT 2018?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): 1 simple thing I would suggest that keep yourself abreast of what is happening around you, especially in policy making and legislative procedures. Be cognizant of current affairs of at least one year prior to the exam.
MBAUniverse.com: Any message you would like to share with the candidates preparing for CAT 2017 and for IRMASAT 2018?
Vedant Mukesh (CAT topper): For CAT, I would suggest that one should be focused and prepare diligently without going haywire during the preparation phase as students generally tend to. Just give this attempt as if it's your only attempt and mark my words, everything will fall in place and you will pass with flying colours. In case you don’t score well in mock tests, never get bogged down and feel disheartened as sincere efforts never go in vain.

MBAUniverse.com: What was your overall preparation strategy for CAT 2016?
Angshuman (CAT topper): I did not take any coaching for CAT. I solved sample papers from various websites including mbauniverse.com. This helped me to understand the types of questions that may come in the examination and I also found out the areas I needed to improve.
MBAUniverse.com: How did you prepare for IRMASAT? Please share your strategy? How much did you score in it?
Angshuman (CAT topper): I prepared from Pratiyogita Darpan and Manorama year book for IRMASAT. I scored 20
MBAUniverse.com: What would you suggest to IRMA aspirants to prepare for IRMASAT 2018?
Angshuman (CAT topper): I would suggest them to keep themselves updated with current affairs, especially government policies and schemes and also read supplementary books like Pratiyogita Darpan.
MBAUniverse.com: Please share your sectional preparation strategy for CAT2016? How did you prepare for each section VARC, DILR, Quant? What study materials and books did you use?
Angshuman (CAT topper): My strengths lied in VARC and DILR but I was weak in Quant. Hence I tried to focus on this section. I gave some mock tests available online. I used only the NCERT mathematics books for the preparation.
MBAUniverse.com: Was there any particular section that you were weak at? How did you overcome this challenge?
Angshuman (CAT topper): I was weak in Quant. I realised through the mock tests that in this section accuracy is far more important than the quantity of questions attempted and hence I tried to answer only those questions I was absolutely sure about. There are plenty of videos available in youtube which too helped me a lot.
MBAUniverse.com: How can candidates use Mock tests better? What is your advice?
Angshuman (CAT topper): From my own experience I can say that mock tests are immensely helpful. Not only they provide insight on the types of questions in the examination but also they give a platform to self-evaluate our preparation and areas of improvement. Also, scoring a decent percentile in the mocks give a lot of confidence for the real exam. I would suggest candidates to give as many mocks as possible as it will also help them in time management which I think is very important for this exam.
MBAUniverse.com: Did you go to offline coaching centre? What role does a coaching centre play?
Angshuman (CAT topper): No I did not go to any offline coaching centre.
MBAUniverse.com: Other than CAT/XAT, which exam did you appear?
Angshuman (CAT topper): Apart from CAT, I only appeared for MAT.

Angshuman (CAT topper): I applied for IRMA, GIM, BIM, IMT, IMI, LBSIM, FORE and IMBHU. Apart from IRMA, I was offered admission from every other college listed above.
MBAUniverse.com: Please share your strategy for the CAT Day. What was your last-minute preparation? How did you plan your CAT test taking?
Angshuman (CAT topper): The best advice I can give is to get plenty of rest and don’t think about it too much. We have been giving exams our whole lives and this is just one of them hence take no pressure. During the exam I attempted only those questions which I was sure about and made sure I was not stuck with one question for too long. Give your best and rest will fall into place.

Q. What was your overall preparation strategy for CAT?
A. I started preparing around March 2017 and I used to study at night after my office hours. Initially, I cleared all my concepts and solved practice sets from study materials. After September, I started taking up mock tests and I used to analyse them diligently till the CAT exam. Besides that, I used to read newspapers and novels daily. This was my overall preparation strategy.Q. Please share your preparation strategy for VARC section in CAT
A. I prepared this section by mainly reading newspapers and novels on day to day basis. Reading the editorial sections of newspapers like Hindu helped me tackling the RC passages which require strong comprehension skills. In addition to that, I practiced other types of questions like odd one out, summary type questions, jumbled paragraph etc. from study materials of various coaching institutes.Q. How did you prepare for Quantitative Ability (QA) section in CAT?
A. I was comfortable with this section as I have an engineering background. Initially, I just went through all the concepts and mugged up the formulae. Learning to solve a question in shortest possible time was the crux of this section and it comes from regular practice. I made sure to practice quant at least for an hour every day and revised the formulae regularly.Q. What was your preparation strategy for DILR Section?
A. This is usually the toughest section of CAT every year and it becomes the differentiating factor between good and excellent students. There is no hard and fast method of mastering this section as most of the concepts are quant based. This section requires rigorous practice of different kinds of sets and analysing them is much more important. I made sure that I solve 4-5 sets daily and I used to invest 10-12 minutes on solving each set and after that 15-20 minutes in analysing the concepts behind it.Q. Was there any particular section/area that you were weak at? How did you overcome this challenge?
A. I was particularly weak at VARC section from the beginning and it remained my weakest link till the end as evident from my sectional percentile. To improve this section, I used to read newspapers like Hindu, Economic Times etc. The editorial articles were particularly useful as they involved understanding the opinion of the author and the RC passages asked in CAT exam requires the same. Learning 4-5 words everyday was also beneficial because it becomes tough to understand some passages due to poor vocabulary. In addition to these, regular practice of different types of questions from study materials helped me a lot to overcome this weakness.Q. What role did Mocks play in your success? How many mocks did you attempt before the exam?
A. Taking up mocks are more important than learning and understanding the topics. I appeared for around 32 mock tests conducted by career launcher. I used to contribute 6 hours after every mock to analyse my mistakes and to understand the loop holes in my preparation. Each and every unsolved question provided a new perspective and brushed up many untouched solving skills. The wrong questions particularly helped me to judge my mistakes and I made sure not to repeat them ever again.Q. Did you self-prepare or attend a coaching centre and why?
A. I prepared by myself as there was no coaching centre available near my home. -
Madhur Mehta
Exam score : 96.65 percentileAn inspiration for non engineers and for Symbiosis B-school aspirants, Madhur Mehta has done his Bachelors in Pharmacy. He is a consistent performer. He scored 88.31% in 10th Std; 76.85% in 12th Std and 7.62 CPI in B.Pharma. Madhur not only cracked SNAP 2016 with 99.23 percentile but also scored 96.65 percentile in CAT 2016; 214 in NMAT 2016 and 99 percentile in MICAT. Despite receiving calls from other B-schools, he preferred Symbiosis Pune as it was his dream B-school.
Madhur is a fresher and got SIBM Pune immediately after his bachelors. He belongs to Bhuj (Kutch) in Gujarat. Madhur attributes his success to his father who has been his inspiration. He loves playing Basketball, Writing and Acting.

Karan Kokane
Exam score : 96.42 percentileKaran completed schooling from Symbiosis Secondary School, Pune with 89.23% in the 10th standard and 92% in 12th standard. With no gap in studies Karan scored a 192 out 200 in the MHT CET 2009 (Engg entrance) exam in the same year and got 69th rank in the whole state of Maharashtra.
Karan opted for computer engineering from College of Engineering, Pune (COEP), and secured a CGPA of 8.6 on a scale of 10 in COEP and was amongst the top 15% in a class of 90 students. Along with maintaining his academics, Karan was active in extracurricular activities. He was the Event head of the event Circuit-Fixer in Mindspark’11 and a sponsorship coordinator in Mindspark’10. Mindspark is COEP’s national level technical festival.
After completing graduation in Electronics and Telecommunication engineering, Karan Kokane got placed in HARMAN International India Pvt. Ltd. as a software programmer and worked with them for 20 months. Karan was awarded the HARMAN Superior Performance award for contributions to the project, and for his performance and potential. Q. What was your strategy in testing room to attempt the questions from different sections: Quantitative Ability & DI, Verbal Ability & LR?
A. I would always start with my strongest section. Also, I would solve the easiest questions first. This ensures that I not only solved many questions quickly in the beginning without wasting time but also I gained confidence. Confidence is an important ingredient while taking exams. Once all the easy questions from the strongest section were done, I would move on to the difficult questions in that section. In this way, I would move from the easiest question from my strongest section to the most difficult section from my weakest section. For me this used to be in the order Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning and Verbal Ability.Q. Which all exams did you write? How did you prepare for them? What score did you get?
A. I appeared for various exams such as CAT, NMAT, XAT and MAH MBA CET. Most of the exams have around 80-90% of their topics in common with each other. I focused on these common topics first. Once I was comfortable with these topics, then when an exam neared, I would concentrate on the rest 20% of the questions that would be different and specific to that exam. For example, it is important to be good at Algebra, TSD or Geometry no matter which exam is next. But when exams such as XAT or CET neared, I would do Decision making or Visual Reasoning to improve at those specific topics. I got 98.763 percentile in NMAT; 96.42 percentile in CAT; 98.25 percentile in XAT and 99.993 percentile in MAH MBA CET.Q. The institutes that offered you admission?
A. SPJAIN- Fin, JBIMS, new IIMs except Rohtak and NMIMSQ.What advice and tips you would like to share with the candidates preparing for CAT?
A.1. It is important to start early to achieve better results.
2. Keep in touch with all topics on a daily basis.
3. In the midst of all this preparation, it is important to not lose contact with one’s hobbies and interests. Do things that interests you on a daily basis to relax and recuperate.
4. While giving the exam, stay calm and focused.
5. Take mocks seriously, but don’t take the percentiles seriously.
Q. Your message to future MBA aspirants.A.Never give up. Keep grinding, keep fighting and keep believing. Dreams are meant to come true. Also know that an MBA is not the be all and end all in life.

Q. What was your overall preparation strategy for CAT?
A. I had joined Tathagat coaching Institute. It is one of the best in Delhi/NCR. The faculty is brilliant and they give you personal attention unlike most of the coaching institutes out there. I was sincere, solving the sheets on time, attending every doubt session. Doubt sessions are extremely important. I read a lot for verbal. I daily took out time after office, for at least one hour of practice. Weekends meant classes plus more practice. I joined TIME Test series and attempted almost all the tests. They are great help.Q. Please share your preparation strategy for VARC section in CAT
A. I read The Hindu daily, focussing on the editorials. I read books by some imminent authors like Charles Dickens, Ayn Rand etc. I practiced RC material given by the institute. Besides that, I read a lot of articles online on websites like Arts and Letters Daily.Q. How did you prepare for Quantitative Ability (QA) section in CAT?
A. I solved a lot of questions. I re-solved them. I focussed on getting my concepts cleared rather than picking up numerous books. I never gave up on any question, gave time to everything.Q. What was your preparation strategy for DILR Section?
A. I Practiced questions given by the institute and those in Time sectional tests. A book of puzzles by George Summers is also good.Q. Was there any particular section/area that you were weak at? How did you overcome this challenge?
A. Data Interpretation (DI) was a challenge. I had to increase my practice hours in it.Q. What role did Mocks play in your success? How many mocks did you attempt before the exam?
A. They are a necessity. CAT is all about time management and being calm during those 3 hours. Mocks teach that.Q. Did you self-prepare or attend a coaching centre and why?
A. I attended a coaching centre to maintain regularity which was otherwise difficult along with a job. -

Exam score : 96.00 percentilePriya Sahni scored 96 percentile in CAT 2016 and converted her call to IIM Indore. Priya had a work experience of 8 months to her credit before joining IIM Indore. Priya (CAT topper): CAT is a qualitative exam and not a quantitative exam. CAT tests your aptitude so it is very important to be very thorough with the concepts and enhance your analytical skills. Every person is good at one section and has another section as a weakness. It is very important to identify both of them and plan your strategy accordingly.MBAUniverse.com: How did you prepare for each section QA, VARC & DILR? What study materials and books did you use?
Priya (CAT topper): For VARC section, the most important part is the maximum time that you can devote to reading. Read a lot. Apart from this practice at least 5 RC’s in a week and analyse them after solving them. Try to find out why your answers went wrong. Do the RC’s in a strict time frame.DILR gets better the more you practice. Try to solve one set every day and never leave any set unsolved no matter how much time it may take.
For Quant also practice is the key. Try to be clear with the concepts. Try to come up with your own shortcuts and logics. I referred to Arun Sharma for my preparation

Priya (CAT topper): I was weak at English. I devoted approximately 40 % of my preparation time just to English. I read in all my free time. Devote more time to the section you are weak at.MBAUniverse.com: How can candidates use Mock tests better? What is your advice?
Priya (CAT topper): I feel that just taking a mock test is not enough. Go for a thorough analysis. I gave 3 hours for the mock test and almost the same amount of time for its analysis. Analyse each question that you did wrong or left. Try to find out which questions were easy and you couldn’t do. Nitesh comes from a modest family of Bhubaneswar, Orissa. His father is a businessman and mother is employed. He has a younger sister studying in class 10. MBAUniverse.com: What was your overall preparation strategy for CAT2016/ XAT 2017?
Ebel Benny (CAT topper): Learning from previous mistakes. This was my last attempt for CATA proper time table was made where time was allotted for all the three sections .I made sure that I attempted atleast 5 mock tests a week which improved my speed and decision making skills to attempt and not attempt the right questions.
After continuously working for long hours I used to reward myself with small breaks which included movies, small outings and parties. This helped me to refresh myself and resume working with more vigour.
MBAUniverse.com: How did you prepare for IRMASAT? Please share your strategy? How much did you score in it?
Ebel Benny (CAT topper): Best material for IRMASAT is YOJNA and Kuruskshetra. Since its beyond our limits read Yojana & Kurukshetra GIST. Apps like Knappily and in shorts might come in handy
IRMASAT portion is of two parts.
1. Static : Govt. programs, development activities, Planning commission etc (pre 2014)2. Current : Government schemes implemented recently (post 2014)
MBAUniverse.com: What would you suggest to IRMA aspirants to prepare for IRMASAT 2018?
Ebel Benny (CAT topper): If time permits read ‘Manorama Year Book’. It had covered almost all the areas of general knowledge required for attempting IRMASAT.
MBAUniverse.com: Please share your sectional preparation strategy for CAT2016/XAT 2017? How did you prepare for each section VARC, DILR, Quant? What study materials and books did you use?
Ebel Benny (CAT topper): I tried to improve the speed of my reading so that I wouldn’t waste my time in the reading comprehension parts. I had made the time table for preparations in such a way that equal time was allotted for DILR and Quant sections. My daily time table was in such a way that I worked on a combination of an easy and a difficult chapter. This ensured that I was not overloaded with work but covered all the chapters at the right time of time.MBAUniverse.com: Was there any particular section that you were weak at? How did you overcome this challenge?
Ebel Benny (CAT topper): I was weak at Verbal Section. I get bored after reading passages. So on a daily basis I practiced 10 RC on time bound and during test I attempt 4 or 5 RC out of the 6 RC.
MBAUniverse.com: How can candidates use Mock tests better? What is your advice?
Ebel Benny (CAT topper): Mock Test are to devise strategy for the D day. Try as many strategies as possible and identify the best one suited. After which it should be practised for at least 60 days (20 mocks). Analysing test is the most important part. For 3 hours test, atleat9 hours should be given for analysis

Ebel Benny (CAT topper): Partly Yes. I had two mentors who guided me through the test and interview preparation. They were part of a premiere coaching institute (IMS)

Ebel Benny (CAT topper): IRMA , IIM – Ranchi, I got selected to IRMA
MBAUniverse.com: Please share your strategy for the CAT/XAT Day. What was your last-minute preparation? How did you plan your CAT/XAT test taking?
Ebel Benny (CAT topper): Never study on three days before CAT then everything would be in our hand. Ensure that you have high score for the last mock test attempted before CAT. Never attempt any mock on last three days.
My scoring area is quant so I used to leave last 3 minutes of DILR to keep my mind freshen for the quant section. It worked on the D day also

Ebel Benny (CAT topper): IRMA had two group activities, of which one is HR level question and other is logical level. PI was mostly centered on “know thyself” and details on work experience.

Ebel Benny (CAT topper): IRMA .It was my first and last option
MBAUniverse.com: Any message you would like to share with the candidates preparing for CAT 2017/XAT 2018 and for IRMASAT 2018?
Ebel Benny (CAT topper): Be calm throughout the preparation and the day of the exam as well. Kill the stress by yourself. For IRMA use both XAT and CAT score.
