WAT topic for MBA: Revival of crumbling Democracy in India

India is said to be the worlds largest democracy. The system appeared to be losing the trust of the people during recent past. Results of recent assembly elections have restored the faith of the people in the Indian democratic system. State of Delhi is a glaring example of the same.

Need of Activism
In the quest for more power and pelf, by a few, pious democratic values were getting diluted. Incidents of arrest of two girls by Mumbai Police; gang rapes; corruption by politicians; lack of planned development; are a few examples on practicing the democratic values in our country. Despite being independent for so many years, we still have demons of social injustice looming large around us. Dalits are still being denied to function despite being appointed as Sarpanch in panchayats of many villages. Untouchability and killing of girl children are some evils still very prevalent. There is no economic or political justice either. The gap between the haves and the have nots is ever increasing.

Democracy at Stake
Parliament and state assemblies are the temples of democracy but the conduct by some of our elected representatives sometimes compels us to lower our heads in shame. Quality debates on serious issues turn out to be noisy and unethical. Fighting, quarrelling, shouting, hurling of chairs have become rampant in these law making bodies.

A Democracy lives longer when it strives for Justice, Equality, Liberty, Fraternity and follows this path. Indian Democratic System has been like a sleeping elephant who has not woken up.
No one can deny that numbers of countries are trying to follow the Democratic model of Indian Polity. So at the Global level we are strong, and are a developing economy.

Activism necessary to implement well intended policies
It is the internal, discrimination and unethical style of implementation of the well intended policies that have been distorting a well developed democracy.
The historical Fast of Civil Society and India Against Corruption leader Shri Anna Hazare for bringing all the big guns within LokPal Bill and the fierce speeches by Mr. Arvind Kejriwal-pointing out individual cases of corruption ultimately kindled some hope among the people. Emergence of Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party and winning most of the Delhi assembly seats have begun sending the warning signals to those who have taken their political well being as granted.

All of us have to play very important and crucial role to protect the Democracy. The Government of the people and by the people can work for the people when people stand with it and remember their duties along with their rights. Ones right is others duty. One can not walk in the middle of the road as a car cannot run on the footpath.

Using the rights is necessary
Use of the rights against injustice in any form has to be exercised like making police complaints, demanding information under RTI, raising the voice through print and electronic media. Constant vigil is the price to be paid to protect the Liberty and social justice. Education system has to be strengthened so that backward and rural population may have broadened vision on equality and fraternity.

Conclusion
Generation of more employment in core sectors of manufacturing and trading will help to lower the widening gap between haves and have nots. Control on steep Population growth is another grey area which has so far not been properly managed and again good education is necessary for this.

Law in India does not punish anyone on the basis of race, caste or creed as in many countries. Indians, if understand this, may make Democracy in India the most respected one
