1. International MBA Placements Dip in Top US B-schools – Wall Street Journal

Let’s start with the global picture. According to an in-depth new report in Wall Street Journal, not all is well with MBA placements, even at the top US B-school. The article stated:

  • For MBAs, landing a job in the U.S. has become increasingly challenging, even for Harvard Business School (HBS) graduates.

  • According to the report, 23% of HBS MBA graduates from the previous spring batch were still seeking employment three months after graduation. This HBS MBA unemployment rate is up from 20% the prior year and 10% in 2022.

  • Other top business schools, including Wharton, Stanford, and NYU Stern, also reported worse placement outcomes last year.

  • Employers like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have reduced MBA hiring, while consulting firms like McKinsey have also cut back on recruitment.

  • Harvard is introducing new tools and courses to assist students in bridging skills gaps and improving job search outcomes.

  • Despite challenges, majority of MBA graduates from elite schools secure well-paying jobs with median starting salaries around $175,000.

Based on the article, here is a summary of the unplaced student percentage for different B-schools:

2. MBA Placements 2025

MBA Placements 2025 is in progress across all B-schools in India. Early reports suggest that MBA Placements 2025 is similar to last year, with no major uptick. IIM Ahmedabad has completed 100% Placements 2025. Check details below.

IIM Ahmedabad Placement 2025: Boston Consulting Group emerges as top recruiter for PGP class
Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) is the first B-school to announce the completion of final placement process for the PGP Class of 2025 on February 12, 2025. Here are the key highlights:

  • IIMA placement 2025 recorded increase in offers in niche consulting (22%), fintech (40%), cards and financial advisory (300%), advisory consulting (120%), retail B2B & B2C (400%), and consumer tech (800%).
  • Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has emerged as the highest recruiter, making 35 offers in total. Accenture Strategy followed closely with 30 offers.
  • In the investment banking sector, Goldman Sachs led with nine offers, followed by Avendus Capital, which extended seven offers.
  • The general management domain saw Tata Administrative Services making five offers, while GMR Group recruited four students of IIM Ahmedabad.
  • The placement process started with the Laterals Placement Process from January 6 to 21, targeting students with prior work experience for middle and senior management roles. FinIQ Consulting was the top recruiter in this phase, making 11 offers, followed by Navi Technologies with 10 offers.
  • Following this, the Final Placements were conducted, where firms were grouped into cohorts based on their industry and core business.
  • Students were allowed to apply to their “dream” companies, even after securing an offer, facilitating better alignment between their career aspirations and job roles. This year witnessed a 16% increase in students making dream applications compared to the previous cycle.
  • Consulting remained a preferred sector, with top recruiters including Accenture Strategy, Bain & Company, Deloitte, EY Parthenon, Kearney, KPMG, McKinsey & Company, Monitor Deloitte, Oliver Wyman, PwC India, Strategy&, and Vector Consulting Group.
  • The investment banking and asset management space saw increased participation from firms such as Arpwood Capital, Bank of America, Citi Bank, Deutsche Bank, Elevation Capital, JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Standard Chartered Bank, and UBS.
  • Consumer goods and tech firms such as Amazon, Flipkart, Google, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, and Zomato also recruited actively. Notable hires in the fintech sector included American Express, Mastercard, and Navi Technologies. Enterprise tech firms such as Adobe, BrowserStack, Microsoft, and Qualcomm also extended offers.

Prof. Viswanath Pingali, Chairperson of the Placement Committee at IIMA, said, “Despite uncertainties in the market, IIMA has once again demonstrated its ability to attract top recruiters. Our students’ diverse skill sets and preparedness ensured a smooth placement process.”

IIM Trichy: 100+ Students Unplaced by Mid-February?
It seems that while the placements at top IIMs are in place, situation in new IIMs is not so good. In an anonymous social media post, a supposedly current student of IIM Trichy wrote on February 11, 2025: “It is second year in a row that students will be convocating unplaced. 120+ students remain unplaced. Placement support will be given till 28th feb and then they will release a report without even a mention of unplaced or forcedly opted out students.” Reacting to the post, a student said, “If this is the case with IIM Trichy, lord save all the tier 2 institutes and my career as well!”

MBAUniverse.com couldn’t independently verify these details.
