MBA Admission Process: Key steps

Admission to MBA/PGDM programme in top rated B schools or in any B-school goes though a certain process. You cannot bye-pass it if you wish to pursue a full time regular residential MBA from one the highly ranked management institutes like FMS, IIFT, XLRI, MDI or one of the 20 IIMs.
Following are the key steps that you have to go through before getting admission offer from one of the good B-schools-

1. Step-1: Decide on B-schools
Different B-schools accept different exam scores. You have to take decision which B-schools you wish to apply.
If you wish to study at IIMs, at XLRI, at Symbiosis, at IIFT or at NMIMS, you have to first take a decision whether you wish to explore admission opportunities in all of them or would like to pick and choose your preferred B-schools.
2. Step-2: Register and apply for entrance Exam
Watch for the notification for the relevant exam that will lead you to your dream B-school.
For NMIMS, Mumbai
If you plan to join MBA at NMIMS Mumbai, you have to register and apply for NMAT by GMAC 2016 exam. The online registration process opens on July 4 and the exam is to be held during 75 days test window from October 7 to December 20, 2016.
For IIMs
If you wish to study in IIMs you will have to register and apply for Common Admission Test (CAT) 2016. The notification for the exam is out in the last week of July and the registration process starts in the 1st week of August. The exam is proposed to be held in the month of November 2016.
For IIFT Delhi & Kolkata
The registration and application process for IIFT entrance exam is to begin in the 3rd week of July 2016. You are supposed to register for the exam if you wish to pursue MBA (IB) from IIFT. The exam is proposed to be held on 3rd or last Sunday in November 2016.
For Symbiosis
The first step for admission to Symbiosis Pune and other 13 institutes affiliated to Symbiosis International University (SIU) Pune, is to register and apply for SNAP 2016 exam. The registration process for SNAP opens in the last week of August.
For XLRI
XLRI Jamshedpur accepts score of only Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT). Registration for XAT 2017 will open in the last week of August 2016 and the exam in paper pen mode is proposed on January 1, 2017.
3. Step-3: Appear in Written exam
Once you have successfully registered and applied for the relevant MBA entrance exam and received your admit card, now is the time to appear in the written exam. The focus should be to score good marks and high percentile in each section of the exam.
4. Step-4: 1st stage shortlisting
You should score above 96-97 percentile with balanced high sectional percentile to get shortlisted at the first stage to appear in final admission round which awards weightage to other factors also.
Your high percentile in the exam can nullify the weightage awarded to other factors in case you have a weak academic profile, no work experience and no academic diversity.
5. Step-5: Personal Interview round
Top management institutes like IIMs, FMS, MDI, XLRI, NMIMS, SIBM, IMI among others have different components in the personal interview round to assess the candidates.
You have to prepare for Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) for IIMs, for other B-schools you may be subjected to Group Discussion based on WAT. Many B-schools also conduct Psychometric tests also. FMS Delhi final admission round has Extempore as integral part of Personal Interview.
Different weightage in the range of 2 to 20 points is awarded by the top B-schools to your performance in class 10, 12 and graduation – if you have scored 90+ marks. If you are a non engineer - you may awarded weightage for academic diversity. If you have work experience – you may get bonus marks. If you are a female – you may be awarded weightage for gender diversity.
Final Admission offer
After completion of final admission round, the admission offers are released by the B-schools in about a month’s time. Your selection in the respective B-school depends upon your performance in written exam; performance in PI round; Academic profile; academic diversity; work experience and gender diversity.
If you have all, you are the winner; if you lack in 1 or 2 areas you can make it up by performing well in exam and PI round for which you need good writing and communication skills.
