IIM Kozhikode Admission 2019: New MBA Batch Commences with 485 Students comprising 30% Females

IIMK is planning a great deal of pedagogical changes to empower the students to meet the future challenges

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode has inaugurated the 23rd batch of Post Graduate Program (PGP) with 485 students and 13th batch of Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) with 16 students on July 3, 2019. Focusing on greater diversity at its campus, the new batch comprises 145 females in PGP and 8 females in FPM.

The inauguration ceremony was conducted successfully in the presence of Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command as the Chief Guest, academia and the students of IIMK. Vice Admiral AK Chawla has a flourishing career of over 28 years in the Indian Navy, and has the distinction of being awarded the Nausena Medal, the Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.

IIMK MBA 2019-21 Batch Profile: Highlights 
Following a rigorous selection criteria, IIM Kozhikode has admitted a more diverse batch. Key highlights of the batch are:

  • Total Students Admitted in PGP 2019-21 Batch: 485
  • Female Students: 30% (145)
  • Non-Engineers: 28%

Betting on the diverse pool of talent, IIM Kozhikode currently has 76 full time faculty members and the new batch includes 16 students for the FPM (Ph.D.) programme and 485 students for the PGP (MBA) programme.

The inauguration ceremony began with an invocation and traditional lamp lighting ceremony by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director at IIMK and the Chief Guest, Vice Admiral AK Chawla, Programme Chairs and Students followed by addresses by the chairpersons of Admissions, PGP and FPM, the Dean- Administration & Development and the Director.

Welcoming the new batch at the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Guest, Vice Admiral AK Chawla, delivered the inaugural address to the students and the faculty of IIMK. He Congratulated each student for securing admission to IIMK. He underscored the importance of brilliant leadership skills and qualities to be emulated by the young generation of managers in the country as its future is in their hands. Citing the life examples of a number of successful leaders, he highlighted that outstanding leadership always has unique qualities such as larger vision, communication skills, innovation and risk taking ability.

The session was concluded by a vote of thanks by the member of the students’ council and the National Anthem.

IIMK: Gender Diversity Higher than National Average
A pioneer in gender and academic diversity among IIMs, IIM-K new batch has 145 female PGP students constituting 30% of the batch size, and 8 female FPM students making 50% of the FPM batch. Supernumerary addition of 60 female candidates has also contributed positively to the increase in gender diversity at IIMK, much higher than the national average. There are 28% non-engineers in the batch, the highest ever in PGP admissions. More over this year, the Institute has admitted a modest number of EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates, in convergence with the national policy.

Commenting on the dire need for diversity in classroom, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIMK said “In a meritocracy, talent is dispersed in multiple demographic and socio-economic spaces. IIMK bets on enhancing the quality of teaching and learning by making its classrooms more diverse and inclusive”.

Pedagogical Changes Planned at IIMK
IIM Kozhikode is planning a great deal of pedagogical changes to empower the students to meet the future challenges. There will be greater internationalization and immersive learning opportunities for the students. In the first year, students are expected to be exposed to many pedagogical innovations and new courses such as Design Thinking, Leadership 4.0, Digital Economy, Immersive Learning among others in order to solve India’s most critical problems.

Rigorous Selection Criteria  
IIM Kozhikode followed a rigorous Admission Criteria 2019 for its PGP 2019-21 batch. CAT 2018 cut offs and weightages to CAT score as well as to other parameters in admission process to PGP 2019-21 batch were re-allocated. A new component ‘Resume’ with 10% weight was added to the final selection process components. As against last year admission criteria, No weightage to bachelor’s degree or to female candidates was awarded in the admission process 2019

One of the biggest shortlisting parameters in IIM Kozhikode admission criteria 2019 was its high weightage to CAT 2018 score which carried a weight of 75% as against other top IIMs who awarded lower weight to CAT scores.

While in the shortlisting for final selection round, CAT 2018 score carried a weight of 75%, the final admission round awarded a weight of only 40% to CAT 2018 percentile score and the admission offer was more dependent upon PI/WAT & Resume which carried the 60% weight.

IIM Kozhikode eligibility criteria 2019 had made it mandatory for CAT 2018 aspirants to score a minimum of 90 overall and 80 sectional percentile in CAT 2018 to become eligible for shortlisting for final admission round.

The Rigorous IIM Kozhikode Admission Process
IIM Kozhikode Admission Criteria 2019-21 was a three step process. The three-stages of selection criteria were:

  1.  Eligibility criteria for admission
  2.  Shortlisting Criteria for Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI)
  3. Final Admission Selection criteria

IIM Kozhikode Admission Eligibility

  1. IIM  Kozhikode Eligibility criteria required that the candidate must hold a bachelor's degree of minimum 3 years duration after class 12, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (in case of the candidate belonging to SC/ST/PwD category, the eligibility criterion is relaxed to 45%
  2. IIM Kozhikode Admission Eligibility criterion required the applicant to appear in CAT 2018 exam and must score minimum prescribed sectional and overall percentile score to become eligible for next stage of shortlisting
  3. A candidate appearing for the final year bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed the degree requirements and awaiting results were also eligible to apply for IIM Kozhikode Admission 2019-21.
  4. IIM Kozhikode Eligibility further clarified that a final year candidate, if selected, could be eligible for the IIM Kozhikode admission only if he/she submitted a certificate latest by June 30, 2019 from the principal/head of the department/registrar/director of the institution/university (issued on or before June 30, 2019) stating that they have completed all the requirements (the result may, however, be awaited) for obtaining the bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification on the date of issue of the certificate.
  5. It is mandatory for a final year student, who is provisionally considered eligible by IIM Kozhikode and offered admission, to submit the mark-sheet and degree certificate of the final year bachelor's degree examination held on or before June 30, 2019.  The deadline to submit the mark-sheet and the certificate is December 31, 2019. 

IIM Kozhikode Shortlisting Criteria
The second stage of IIM  Kozhikode Admission criteria was the shortlisting criteria before final selection round. IIM Kozhikode shortlisted the candidates on the basis of CAT 2018 score, past academic performance, and other criteria as under:

  • The shortlisting for final selection round in IIM Kozhikode Admission Criteria awarded 75% weight to CAT 2018 score, 20% weight to Class XII score and 5% to Diversity
  • The candidate must have scored minimum sectional percentile of 80 in each of the three sections of CAT 2018 – Quantitative Aptitude' (QA), ‘Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning' (DILR) and ‘Verbal and Reading Comprehension' (VRC)
  • A candidate must have scored minimum overall percentile of 90 in CAT 2018
  • If the candidate could not score minimum prescribed percentile in CAT 2018, he/she could not be considered for shortlisting for final selection stage.
  • The candidate with excellent score in class 12 was awarded higher points in shortlisting criteria
  •  No Weightage was awarded for Bachelor’s degree marks.
  • Academic Diversity was awarded 5 points out of 100 in the IIM Kozhikode shortlisting criteria for final admission round.
  • All the Candidates shortlisted for WAT and PI had to attend both WAT and PI, failing which they were not considered for the final admission

IIM Kozhikode Shortlisting Weightage
IIM Kozhikode shortlisted the candidates for WAT & PI stage on the basis of three parametres which were arrived at by accounting for CAT 2018 score, academic scores, and academic diversity. There was no weightage to the academic scores beyond class 12:

A shortlist of candidates in each category was created based on an Aggregate Index Score (AIS). The AIS was computed based on the performance in CAT 2018, Class XII marks and Academic Diversity. The weight of each component in the AIS is as follows:

Please also note that after declaration of shortlist, IIM Kozhikode does not send any individual regret letter to applicants who are not shortlisted for WAT and PI.

Final Admission Selection Round Criteria

  • All the shortlisted candidates had to participate in Final selection round for admission to IIM Kozhikode
  • IIM Kozhikode selection criteria after final admission round are based on CAT 2018 score, Essay Writing Test, personal Interview and Resume of the candidate.

  • IIM Kozhikode conducted the PI and WAT in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Mumbai and New Delhi.
  • Final Admission offer was made in the last week of April/first week of May 2019 on the basis of performance in PI, WAT, CAT 2018 exam and Resume.

PI-WAT Evaluation

Essay Writing (WAT) & GD on Same Topic

  • In the Essay Writing Test, the candidate had to write a short essay and participate in group discussion on the same topic
  • The topic was announced at the venue just before the GD/WAT.
  • The topics were based on current political, economic, sports, business affairs, etc.

Personal Interview (PI)

  • Personal Interview (PI) followed the WAT/GD round on the same day same session
  • During the personal interview, the panel evaluated the academic background, quality of work experience and other personal traits
  • The PI-WAT process was over in half day session either morning or afternoon

IIM Kozhikode Admission Cut Off  
IIM Kozhikode Cutoff 2019 clarified that the candidates above the minimum cut-offs in the CAT 2018 sectional percentile ranks, the overall percentile rank and obtaining a positive (greater than zero) raw score in all sections of CAT-2018 would be considered for all the subsequent stages.

Minimum Required Academic Score
Candidates with following minimum score in class X and XII was considered for shortlisting by IIM Kozhikode. The percentage of marks obtained in Class X and Class XII was calculated based on the aggregate marks of all subjects that appeared in the marks sheet or grade sheet, irrespective of whether the Board considers them for calculation of percentage.

  • The total programme fees payable by PGP students at IIM Kozhikode is Rs 17,50,000/-.
  • The course fee includes tuition, course material, boarding and lodging
