On December 5, 2013 the UGC had stirred the hornets nest by announcing new draft guidelines to regulate thousands of technical colleges including engineering and management schools in the country. As per the guidelines,Independent B-Schools which follow their own curriculum and set their own course fees, were also required to obey the guidelines and seek affiliation to universities that function under the UGC and adopt their syllabus.
The UGCs new draft guidelines are facing stiff opposition from educational bodies like EPSI, AIMS, FAMPEI and IAABS since the B schools are now concerned about losing their autonomy. It was reported by the Business daily Mint on January 8, 2014, that MHRD has decided not to apply the UGC guidelines regulating the technical institutes to PGDM B-Schools.
