CAT 2014 Result to be declared on Dec 27; know the key facts and decide

The announcement by CAT Centre 2014 to declare CAT 2014 result on December 27, the level of anxiety is now shifted on what the expected percentile will be and how it is arrived at by CAT Centre. The candidates are hopeful that the CAT Centre 2014 will also publish the process of score normalization along with the declaration of the CAT 2014 result.

CAT 2014 result which was supposed to be declared in the third week now stands delayed by one week in the pursuit of excellence to ensure full transparency and accuracy in award of percentile scores after normalization. Dr Rohit Kapoor shared with MBAUniverse.com on Dec 15 that in a day or two he would announce the result declaration date. However due to one or other problem in the final checks in the processing of score normalization, the result declaration was further delayed. It was only in the evening after 6 PM on Dec 22, 2014 that the CAT Convener could share the exact date of CAT 2014 result stating On 27th Dec, 2014 evening, we are going to release the results for the candidates.

The earliest result despite the delay

1.7 lakh candidates who took CAT 2014 have been waiting for the CAT 2014 result to be declared as per the schedule. Their worry began to soar when they had no information regarding the result declaration date and one or other media report speculating the result declaration date added to their confusion. There was a common thought that like other important activities CAT 2014 result will also be substantially delayed. But with the announcement of CAT 2014 result declaration date, all the speculation is put to rest and despite being delayed by a week, this is the first CAT during past 6 years that is going to declare the result so early. Results of past CAT exams were usually declared in the 2nd or 3rd week of January every year. This is the first year for CAT 2014, that CAT 2014 results are going to be declared on Dec 27, 2014 and before the onset of new-year.

Despite the late CAT 2014 as it took place a month late in comparison to earlier CAT exams, the result of CAT 2014 is going to be declared a month earlier.

Early result to expedite the process of admission

IIMs the flagship B schools accepting CAT scores used to begin their admission process in the month of February after declaration of CAT results in the month of January. However, for admission 2015 not only IIMs but also other top rated B schools will be able to short list the candidates on the basis of CAT 2014 scores and begin their next stage of admission process in the month of January 2015. This will advance the MBA/PGDM admission process by a month or so.

The academic session that used to begin in the month of July can also be started a month earlier in the B schools in 2015 after early completion of final admission process.

Early CAT result: decision for future

The move for early declaration of CAT 2014 result was welcomed by the CAT 2014 takers as well as the mentors as it would help the aspirants to decide their future course of action to explore admission opportunity and whether to appear in other management entrance exams for admission 2015.

Candidates have time enough to decide and refrain from being panicky now and can have a sigh of relief as the final announcement on CAT 2014 result declaration date has been made.

Score normalization: the biggest hurdle

It is not easy to equate and normalize the scores of lakhs of test takers in a short period of one month, that too when the CAT 2014 was conducted in 2 day test window instead of earlier 20 days. There was plenty of time available in past CAT years to equate, normalize and process the scores before declaration of CAT result. In past years, CAT exam used to begin in the middle of October and continued till the first week of November. Results used to be declared in January in the following year which means it took more than 2 months to process the CAT result.

On the other hand in CAT 2014 the testing window was short and result processing has also got a short span before declaration of result for almost same number of test takers as appeared in CAT 2013.

Sharing the concern on the big issue on score normalization process Dr Rohit Kapoor, CAT 2014 convener and faculty IIM Indore says CAT 2014 result will be declared only after ensuring the complete transparency, equity and fairness in the process. In fact CAT 2014 has adopted the score normalization process on the lines of GATE and once after multiple checks on the process the score normalization has yielded the transparent result, the final date of CAT 2014 result declaration has been announced by the CAT Centre 2014.
