MAH CET 2015: Top B schools are for candidates with low scores; High scorers looking at DTE to help
Quick analysis of MAH CET 2015 result reflects higher percentiles awarded to low scorers in slot-2 and low percentile to high scorers in other slots
Opening the Pandoras Box with its process of awarding equated scores in MAH CET 2015 results based on Slot 2, Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) Maharashtra has not yet been able to solve the problem. For anyone who can understand a little, quick analysis of MAH CET 2015 result reflects higher percentiles awarded to low scorers in slot-2 and low percentile to high scorers in other slots.
MAH-MBA/MMS CET 2015 was conducted on March 14 & 15, 2015 in 2 sessions on each day. The exam was marred with technical glitches, wrong questions in question paper, half printed questions in question paper, missing or more than one same answer options. Accepting this fact to some extent DTE Maharashtra decided not to evaluate 59 questions out of 800 questions in the exam.
But all went loose when DTE Maharashtra decided to adopt the process of equating scores based on Session-2 test of March 14, 2015. The reason shared by DTE Maharashtra for picking the Percentile scale of Batch II as the reference base for equi-percentile method while processing the MAH CET 2014 result is that the maximum number of 14817 candidates appeared for this batch and rest of the batches had fewer candidates in each session.
Slot-2 candidates: Most benefitted
Had the formula worked well it would have not caused panic and furore among test takers. But it was not so, as the test takers in other slots despite scoring high have not been able to get high percentile. The reason cited by these students is that it is because of making slot-2 as reference batch.
Shocking but true: Same scores reflect different percentile
Moving forward to analyse the scoring pattern in MAH CET 2015 result, it has been shared with MBAUniverse.com that the candidate scoring 127 out of 181 in slot-1 has been awarded percentile of 83.219 whereas the candidate in slot-2 scoring 127 out of 182 has been awarded a percentile of 97.429.
Similarly, the top percentiler also belongs to slot-2 with 155 marks and percentile score of 99.993, the slot-1 scorer of 155 marks has secured only a percentile of 98.796. While the slot-1 candidate with 155 marks may not expect admission in JBIMS unless he belongs to Reserve category, the slot-2 candidate with same score will sure get JBIMS as he has secured 99.99 percentile at the same score.
A candidate with 160 marks in first session on March 14, 2015 must not compare and rate him at par with a candidate in second session on March 15, 2015 scoring even less than 155. The latter one with a score of 152 has been awarded percentile as high as 99+ as against the percentile of 97+ awarded with same score for the first day first session.
One who has scored 124 marks in slot-1 has secured percentile of 80+ and the slot-2 test taker with 97 marks has also scored the same percentile. This anomaly has not only created panic among the students but the credibility of MAH CET exam is also at stake. On the top of it DTE Maharashtra is neither sharing any positive response nor making any apparent efforts to defuse the problem.
Adverse Impact: High Percentilers to get JBIMS, SIMSREE
The basis of admission to top B schools like JBIMS, SIMSREE and others is not your raw scores but the equated scores leading to high or low percentile. A candidate despite scoring 160 marks may not get admission to JBIMS if he has a lower percentile while a candidate with 155 marks can get admission to JBIMS if he has high percentile to his credit.
This is exactly what appears to have happened in declaration of MAH CET 2015 result. Number of candidates contantly approaching MBAUniverse.com have stated that they cannot accept the idea of DTE Maharashtra to select the slot-2 on first day of exam as the reference batch for equated scores as the unilateral strategy of DTE is causing loss of percentile depriving them of their admission rights to the appropriate B school. They want either re-exam or well acceptable calculation methodology for equated scores.
The criteria adopted by DTE Maharashtra may enable the slot-2 candidate with 152 marks to get top B schools like JBIMS & SIMSREE while the slot-1 candidate even with 160 marks may not get JBIMS.
Expected Cut off Percentile in top B schools
According to the trend in award of percentile scores in MAH CET 2015, it is expected that cut-off scores in admission for MBA/MMS 2015-17 may also benefit slot-2 candidates more. In case DTE Maharashtra does not come out with some other criteria to update the percentile scores, following could be the cut off percentile for admission to MBA/MMS programmes in top B schools in Maharashtra
