Government appoints Dr V Anantha Nageswaran, Former Dean of IFMR GSB at Krea University, as new Chief Economic Advisor

Dr V Anantha Nageswaran, Former Dean of IFMR GSB and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Economics at Krea University has been appointed as the new Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) of Government of India. On January 28, Dr Anantha has assumed charge. Earlier, he was a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India from 2019 to 2021

Government appoints Dr V Anantha Nageswaran, Former Dean of IFMR GSB at Krea University, as new Chief Economic Advisor

The Government of India has appointed Dr VAnantha Nageswaran, Former Dean of IFMR GSB and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Economics at Krea University, as the new Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) of Government of India. Announcing his appointment on January 28, Ministry of Finance said, “The Government has appointed Dr V. Anantha Nageswaran as the Chief Economic Advisor and today, he has assumed charge.” Earlier, he was a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India from 2019 to 2021.

Previous CEA KV Subramanian’s three-year term ended in December 2021 and he returned to academics as a Professor at Indian School of Business (ISB). Dr Nageswaran completed his Post-Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Ahmedabad in 1985 and earned his doctoral degree in Finance from the University of Massachusetts in 1994 for his work on the empirical behaviour of exchange rates.

Dr. Nageswaran’s appointment as the new CEA is a matter of great pride for the Indian management education as the CEA advises the government on economic matters and authors the economic survey presented in Parliament a day before the Union budget presentation.The Economic Survey is seen as an independent critique of the state of the economy, which highlights both achievements and challenges facing the government of the day. Dr Nageswaran’s appointment comes when the Indian economy is recovering from the devastating impact of the pandemic.

Dr Anantha Nageswaran’s Corporate Career
Between 1994 and 2004, Dr Nageswaran worked for Union Bank of Switzerland (now UBS) and for Credit Suisse in Switzerland and in Singapore. In July 2006, he joined Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd. in Singapore as the Head of Research for Asia. In March 2009, he was appointed as the Chief Investment Officer for the bank, and has been consulting, writing and teaching since July 2011.

Dr Anantha Nageswaran’s Association with Management Education
Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran was the Dean of IFMR GSB. He is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Economics at Krea University. Dr Anantha Nageswaran has also been an adjunct faculty with the Singapore Management University and with the Wealth Management Institute at the Nanyang Technological University. He is a co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of NPS International School, Singapore.

Dr Anantha Nageswaran’s Research and Publication
Dr Anantha Nageswaran is a prolific researcher and commentator on public policy and economy. He has co-authored books, ‘Economics of Derivatives’ and ‘Derivatives’ which were published by the Cambridge University Press in March 2015 and October 2017 respectively. Another co-authored work, ‘Can India grow?’ has been published by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in November 2016. His recent book, “The Rise of Finance: Causes, Consequences and Cures” has been published in 2019 by Cambridge University Press. His columns appear in popular press in leading newspapers like The Hindu and Indian Express.

Welcoming Dr Anantha Nageswaran’s appointment, Vice-Chancellor of Krea University, Dr. Mahesh Rangarajan said, “It is a matter of pride for all in Krea University to learn of Dr Anantha Nageswaran’s appointment as the Chief Economic Advisor. Prof Nageswaran is distinguished as much for his scholarship as his qualities as a teacher and mentor.
