IIM Rohtak has again been designated as the CAP coordinator for second consecutive year for CAP 2018 which will see participation of 11 new IIMs instead of 9 last year. CAP 2018 will consist of common WAT and PI process for the participating 11 new IIMs. CAP last year was also conducted by IIM Rohtak and will be conducted by the same IIM in 2018 again. During the past few years, the responsibility to conduct has been shared by IIM Trichy, IIM Udaipur, IIM Kashipur and IIM Rohtak.

IIM Nagpur & IIM Visakhapatnam say ‘No’ to CAP
Not now but may be later IIM-N and IIM-V might begin participating in CAP round meant for new IIMs. Except IIM Nagpur mentored by IIM Ahmedabad,  and IIM Visakhapatnam mentored by IIM Bangalore, all the new IIMs have come on board to participate in Common Admission Process (CAP) 2018.  The CAP 2018 will see participation of undernoted new IIMs for admission 2018-20:

  • IIM Amritsar
  • IIM Bodhgaya
  • IIM Jammu
  • IIM Kashipur
  • IIM Raipur
  • IIM Ranchi
  • IIM Rohtak
  • IIM Sambalpur
  • IIM Sirmaur
  • IIM Trichy
  • IIM Udaipur.

New IIMs announce their admission criteria
While many new IIMs announced their admission criteria for PGP 2018-20 batch before the CAT 2017 exam date, remaining others have come out with their admission policy for PGP 2018-20 batch immediately after CAT 2017 exam was over on November 26. Now CAT exam takers are busy in calculation of their sectional and overall percentile to ascertain their chances of getting shortlisted by the IIMs.

Role of CAP 2018 in admission to 11 new IIMs
Common Admission Process (CAP) was the novel idea devised initially by 6 new IIMs from admission year 2014 even before the birth of baby IIMs to facilitate the final admission round comprising Writing Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). The key features of CAP 2018 round are:

  • The participating IIMs will individually shortlist the candidates for CAP 2018 as per their shorting criteria
  • There will be 11 new IIMs out of total 13 new IIMs who will participate in CAP 2018 co-ordinated by IIM Rohtak from February 2018 onwards after declaration of CAT 2017 result in the second week of January 2018
  • After completion of CAP 2018, all the participating IIMs will be provided with the list of successful candidates in order of merit. The participating IIMs will then make final admission offer to the candidates as per their individual admission criteria after giving due weightage to other admission parameters like Academic excellence, diversity, work experience among others.
  • It is not necessary that the candidates getting high scores in CAP 2018 may get admission offer from the participating IIMs unless they meet other individual admission criteria of the participating IIM.

CAP 2018 Dates announcement after CAT 2017 Result date
The CAP 2018 coordinating IIM for 11 participating new IIMs, IIM Rohtak, proposes to announce  CAP 2018 round dates after the CAT 2017 result is declared. Sources at IIM Rohtak have informed that the exact dates of PI & WAT, along with the locations will be shared after the CAT 2017 results are out. The shortlisted candidates will be able to check their CAP 2018 dates on website of respective IIMs and will also be informed on their registered mail only after the CAT 2017 result date.

It is expected that CAP 2018 will commence after 2 weeks from the CAT 2017 result date.

CAP 2018: Components
Common Admission Process (CAP) 2018 for 11 new IIMs will consist of two components as final selection round called final admission stage.

The shortlisted candidates for CAP 2018 will be required to appear for

  1. Written Analysis Test (WAT), and
  2. Personal Interview (PI)

Please note that all the 11 IIMs may have similar shortlisting criteria but will announce their shortlisting criteria independent of others and despite going for Common Admission Process (CAP) final merit list will be generated by each of them separately.

CAP: coordination between new and old IIMs
Students shortlisted for some older IIMs might not have to appear for the CAP, as some of the older IIMs will share their PA scores with IIM Rohtak. Those candidates who have been called by more than 1 older IIM will have their scores averaged across the IIMs where they have been interviewed. Finally, the scores of PA Process will be shared with the other IIMs participating in CAP, who will then make their own merit lists according to the normalized scores.

CAP 2018 round in 5 cities
The CAP 2018 comprising Personal Interview and Written Analysis Test would be conducted at New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. The exact date for PI & WAT will be communicated to the short-listed candidates by IIM Rohtak which is Co-ordinating CAP 2018 for 2018-20 batch on behalf of 11 new IIMs. The candidates who are not shortlisted by the 11 new IIMs will not be sent further communication.

With the increased intake for PGP 2018-20 batch in almost all the new IIMs and with the announced policy of shortlisting 10 to 12 times candidates for PI round, it appears that no fewer than 12000 to 13000 candidates would be shortlisted for CAP 2018 round.
