The Institute for Financial Management & Research (IFMR), Chennai will offer two opportunities to the candidates for admission to MBA 2018-20 batch by conducting two admission rounds – Early Decision and General round. It may be noted that IFMR has been awarded the status of University and offers MBA since the batch of 2017. The step was taken by IFMR as soon as the Union Cabinet cleared the IIM Bill enabling IIMs to award MBA degree.

The Early Decision Round is dedicated to those applicants who are currently employed and have work experience of 12 months to 36 months as of 1st December 2017. The deadline for this round is 18th December 2017.

The General Round is open to all applicants, who may or may not be employed.  The deadline for this round is 5th February2018. The selection process for this round is scheduled in March 2018.

The selection process at IFMR consists of Written Ability Test (WAT) followed by personal interview (PI).

Early Decision Round: Last date to apply – December 18
Those who are employed and have work experience of 12 months to 36 months, as on December 1, 2017, can utilize the admission opportunity through Early Decision round at IFMR. The last date to apply is December 18.

Important steps in Early decision round

  • This round is designed to enable selected applicants to fulfill their notice period and still join the course in time.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be called for Early Decision Round selection process, scheduled in late Jan – early Feb 2018 to be held at Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune – subject to a viable number of shortlisted candidates in each of these centers.

Profile based shortlisting

  • At least 60% in X, XII and graduation are required for shortlisting based on marks in school and college.
  • To be shortlisted applicant must have either written GRE/GMAT on /after 1st Jan 2015 or CAT in 2017  or must be registered to write XAT 2018/ CMAT 2018 – the applicant must have a registration number/ proof of registration.
  • The shortlist for the Early Decision Round  will be announced by the 8th of January2018.

Final selection process through Early Decision Round (EDR)
The Selection Process includes WAT (writing ability test) and PI (personal Interview). The important point is that in WAT and PI, the focus will be on the work experience.

Going by the past trends, the WAT last year had a topic “It is easier to convince the client than to convince the boss”, and the applicant had to write both FOR and AGAINST the topic.

Key points to crack WAT
During the WAT process, IFMR will be looking for the ability to articulate a position and the ability to disengage from that position. Accordingly, there must be no obvious grammatical or punctuation errors

Constitution of Interview panel and PI process at IFMR
Interview Panel will have one or more Senior Managers from Corporates, apart from IFMR professors. During the PI, the applicant is evaluated on following:

  • Oral articulation of the points mentioned by the applicant in the WAT essay and the essay in their application form.
  • Depth of knowledge in topics related to their work experience.
  • An understanding of how their own organization works, and how it is performing in the market place compared to the competition.
  • Awareness of emerging issues (Technology/ Political/Regulatory, etc.) that would potentially affect their organization and/or their job.
  • Since the interviews are being held in late January / early February, IFMR will seek the applicant’s performance on entrance exams only during/after the WAT/PI.

Weightage to exam scores
For the Early Decision Roiund, the weight given to entrance exam scores is only 20% and Sectional Scores not considered separately.

Final Admission offer
The offer letters for the first merit list would be given by 26th Feb 2018, so that applicants can fulfill their notice period and join IFMR on /before 1st June 2018. Sharing about the USPs of Early Decision Round, Prof Suresh Venkatraman, faculty at IFMR emphasized, “ We are very keen that employed applicants leave their employer on good terms because that allows the applicant to later seek recommendations, or even rejoin the company in a higher level and different role.”

In General round all the candidates , who may or may not be currently employed and the candidates who were earlier employed and are currently not employed should apply through this round only.

Candidates without any work experience, or less than the required work experience (for Early Decision Round), if shortlisted will be called for selection process only in the General Round. The last date to apply in General round is February 5, 2018.
