IIM Bangalore – A Brief History
In 1972, a committee led by Prof Ravi J. Matthai, the founding director of IIM Ahmedabad and IRMA, observed the increasing demand for graduates from the prestigious IIMs in Calcutta and Ahmedabad. Recognizing this demand, the committee recommended the establishment of two more IIMs. The creation of an institute in Bangalore was specifically aimed at addressing the requirements of the public sector organizations.

To support the proposed institute, the Government of Karnataka provided 100 acres of land at no cost and contributed financially. T. A. Pai and N. S. Ramaswamy were appointed as the chairman and director, respectively. The inauguration of the institute took place on 28 October 1973, with the presence of Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India at that time.
