In his first media interview on this announcement, Mr. Jain shared with MBAUniverse.com the rationale behind launching SP Jain London School of Management. Edited excerpts from this interaction follow:
Q: So, how does it feel to lunch a new campus in London?
A: I am hugely excited! This is the landmark moment for us and me. Launching campus in London is special because this a completely new greenfield B-school in UK which is a very tough market to operate it. UK Regulators have very high standards. It took us about 18 months of planning. And now it’s a reality!
Q: So, what will be the name of this new B-school?
A: This is a new B-school brand called SP Jain London School of Management. It is a new entity for UK market, and will offer a recognized UK degree from 2023.
Q: When will it start operations and what programs will it offer?
A: We will start enrolments for 2023 academic session. We will offer many programs including Global MBA, Executive MBA online and also new programs aimed at the UK market.
This new campus will be a step in the right direction and help in broadening the opportunities and exposure for students in the commercial capital. It will help India to transform its own global brands of education.
Q: How many students are your expecting for the first year?
A: As always, we are focussed on quality. We expect about 300 total students, half of which should be British students.
Q: Where exactly will the campus be located?
A: The S P Jain London campus will be located in the heart of London’s financial, business and tech district—Canary Wharf. It is equivalent to what Nariman Point was or BKC is in Mumbai!
Q: Why did SP Jain choose UK as a new campus destination?
A: London was an obvious choice for S P Jain’s fifth campus. It is one of the world’s leading cities. It is the world’s second largest financial centre, home to over 190 global companies and ranked one of the best cities in the world for university students.
Q: How does the new campus integrate with the existing campuses?
A: Students opting for the tri-city programs will have the option to study with us in London. This way they can broaden their exposure in yet another commercial capital. Similarly, students opting to study in London will also have the opportunity to study at other SP Jain international campuses and add more global dimension to their degrees.
Q: Have you appointed leadership team for the UK campus?
A: Yes, Dr. Kim Soin is the Dean of SP Jain London School of Management. Dr. Soin has over 25 years’ experience, working across the UK Higher Educator sector at King’s College London, University of Greenwich and University of Exeter. These are a part of the Russel group (the IVY League of the UK).
We have also appointed a Chief Operating Officer to look after the campus affairs.
Q: What about the Faculty? Are you planning to hire in UK.
A: Yes, we will be hiring specially for UK campus. But the School will use its current 50 professors as well. We will add more UK based faculty taking the strength to 60 initially and to 75 next year.
Q: Dr ML Srikant, Former Dean of SPJIMR, has been your mentor. How do you remember him…
A: Indeed, Dr Srikant was my mentor and guide. He was a visionary and way ahead of the times! He made a big impact on me and SP Jain Global. I remember him fondly on this day and miss him.
