NIRF Rankings 2024: Which B-schools have seen big drops in Rankings? Check MBAUniverse.com Analysis of NIRF Ranking (Part 3)

Indian Institute of Management Udaipur

Established in 2011 by Government of India, IIM Udaipur was one of the fastest-growing management schools in the country with a flourishing research ecosystem. IIM Udaipur runs 2 Years full time MBA Program, and many Executive MBA programs.

IIM Udaipur NIRF Rankings slipped by 6 ranks from #16 in NIRF 2023 to #22 in NIRF 2024. Check table 1 (a) below. Indeed, it is disappointing to see IIM Udaipur falling out of Top 20 Ranked B-schools in NIRF 2024 Ranking.

What let to this fall? According to MBAUniverse.com IIM Udaipur Ranking page, while the total score in NIRF Management Ranking 2023 was 304.22, it fell to 294.29 in NIRF Management Ranking 2024. This fall in total score is due to fall in scores for almost all parameters, particularly the Teaching, learning, and resources (TLR), Research and professional practice (RPC) and Peer perception (Perception). This drop is surprising as IIM Udaipur seems to be doing well on all counts. Check table 1 (b) below based on last three year’s data from IIM Udaipur Ranking page on MBAUniverse.com. This drop can also be clearly seen in the Chart 1 below.

Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli

Similar to IIM Udaipur, Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli (IIMT) was established in January 2011 as the eleventh IIM in India. IIM Trichy has a consistent record of 100% placements. In the Final Placements 2024, IIM Trichy has registered average salary at Rs. 19.43 LPA. IIM Tiruchirappalli is functioning from its sprawling state-of-the-art campus spread over 175 acres of land near Tiruchirappalli International Airport.

Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli has slipped by 5 ranks this year – slipping down from #22 (2023) to #27 (2024). Here, it may also be noted that IIM Trichy has been falling consistently in the NIRF Rankings. It was ranked #18 in 2022. Check table 2 (a) below.

Big Drop in Rankings for many Public Universities
It is not just the IIMs which have seen a big fall in their rankings. Well established B-schools in public universities such as Anna University, Aligarh Muslim University, NIBM Pune and UBS Chandigarh have also done poorly. Check list of some other B-schools which have seen a big fall.

NIRF ranking is based on National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) that ranks institutions based on five predefined parameters – refer table below.

Wild Swings in NIRF Rankings: Credibility Issue?
As this three-part article series has shown, there are big swings in NIRF Rankings. For instance, IIFT New Delhi Rankings shot up by 12 ranks while IIM BG and IIM Sirmaur rankings shot up by 14 and 41 ranks respectively! On the other side, several B-schools saw a massive drop of 20-25 rankings. Check table 5 below.

This begs a question: Are such wild swings possible in "real" performance of any B-school’s Teaching resources, Research output, and Placements? This is especially hard to believe when the data used for NIRF Rankings is an average of three years, not one!

The other big question is the measurement of “Perception” score. Whose perception is NIRF measuring and why? None of the top international rankings, such as by Financial Times and Economist, or the two credible Indian Rankings by Business Today and MBAUniverse.com, have any weightage for perception score.
