International Media Reports Highlight North-South Divide in India

In a recent article in Economist magazine titled, To see India’s future, go south. The country’s regional division could make it—or break it, said: “Most people know that India is a rising economic power. It is already the world’s fifth-largest economy and is growing faster than any big rival, with a turbocharged stockmarket that is the fourth-largest of any country’s. It is also common knowledge that India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, is its most powerful in decades and that, as well as economic development, his agenda includes a Hindu-first populism that can veer into chauvinism and authoritarianism. Less well known is that these competing trends of development and identity politics are together fuelling a striking third trend: a growing north-south split.” Several such articles have appeared in national and international press. Let’s know the facts on North-South Divide in India.

Key Points with Facts and Data

1. North-South Divide in India - Economic Differences

  • Southern states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Telangana contribute significantly to India’s GDP. Tamil Nadu alone contributes around 9.8% of India's GDP (2022-23).
  • Northern states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan struggle with lower per capita income. For instance, Bihar's per capita income in 2022-23 was ₹54,383, compared to Karnataka's ₹3,29,000 (nearly 6 times higher).
  • Bengaluru and Hyderabad rank among the top global IT hubs, attracting investments from tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.
  • Except for Delhi NCR, the northern states remain largely dependent on agriculture. However, the Government is taking many initiatives to ensure balanced growth.

2. North-South Divide in India - Social and Cultural Differences

  • Language and Identity:  As per the 2011 Census, 43.6% of Indians speak Hindi as their primary language. But southern states prioritize regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. Protests against Hindi imposition have been frequent in Tamil Nadu for more than five decades.
  • Education and Health: Kerala’s literacy rate stands at 96.2%, the highest in India, while Bihar's is only 61.8% (2021). This creates a North-South Divide in India.
  • Gender Equality: Southern states fare better in terms of gender ratio. Kerala has 1,084 females per 1,000 males, whereas Uttar Pradesh has only 912 females per 1,000 males (Census 2011). This also reflects a North-South Divide.

3. North-South Divide in India - Political Implications

  • Politics in North India has been dominated in last decade by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). Restoring the Hindu traditions and past glory has been one of the centres of their policies highlighted by the recent rebuilding of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Meanwhile, South India is less focussed on nationalist issues, and is more focused on regional identity issues.
  • The regional cultural and social differences have divided the country on political lines. Overall BJP has failed to achieve much success in the south. Except for Karnataka, the BJP has failed to make major inroads into the five states of South India.
  • Both main parties in Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), are rooted in the local Dravidian Movement, which has few takers outside of Tamil Nadu. The movement calls for the Dravidian peoples of South India to demand a separate and distinct nation that needed to be drawn away from northern influence. Similar ethos is seen in other states in South India.
  • Representation in Governance:  Uttar Pradesh, with 80 Lok Sabha seats, dominates Parliament, while Tamil Nadu and Kerala together have 59 seats. This population-based seat allocation often causes Southern states to feel underrepresented.

4. North-South Divide in India - Hindrance to National Progress

  • Fragmentation of Unity:  Regionalism is evident in politics, with parties like DMK in Tamil Nadu emphasizing Tamil identity over national integration.
  • Difference in Education: The North-South divide has also manifested in debates over issues like the National Education Policy and the imposition of Hindi.
  • Skill Drain from North to South:  Many Skilled labor and professionals often migrate from northern states to southern cities for better opportunities, contributing to development in the South and increase in North-South Divide in India.

5. North-South Divide in India - Suggestions to Bridge the Gap

  • Policy Reforms: Union government should take measures to ensure equitable distribution of funds and policies across India.
  • Infrastructure Development: Focused investments to connect Northern States with South India can boost economic potential and bridge divide.
  • Cultural Exchange: Programs like National Integration Camps in Education Institutions can foster understanding among youth from different regions.

In conclusion, India does have regional differences, but these are not as deep or prominent as believed. India’s diversity is its strength, and balanced development policies can ensure that no region is left behind. By leveraging regional strengths and fostering cooperation, India can turn perceived divisions into drivers of national progress.
