Program Highlight

IIFT offers 3 years full time Ph.D. Programme in Management. The programme covers Doctoral research in a variety of business related areas leading to the award of Ph.D degree. The programme is targeted at research scholars, members of teaching faculty in universities and institutes of higher learning, professionals from private, public and government sectors. The main objectives of the Ph.D. Programme are to facilitate pursuing higher studies and advanced research in International Business; to encourage and doing research on contemporary issues in the field of International Business; to encourage publication of research papers in academic journals, occasional papers, monographs, books and other publications.

One of the primary purposes of doctoral studies is to encourage in-depth analysis and enrich knowledge in the chosen field. This includes the ability to apply independently methodologies of scientific research as well as to create new scientific knowledge. Further, the candidate should demonstrate an ability to analyze critically research results and to understand their importance in the relevant context. Skills to present and to effectively communicate research results are needed in order to succeed in postgraduate studies. Thus, it is important to assume an adequate knowledge and understanding of the problems, research methodologies, historical developments, theory formulation and societal importance of the scientific disciplines which are related to the candidates own research field. IIFT has two campuses viz, New Delhi and Kolkata. Selected candidates can attend the course work classes from Delhi as well as Kolkata (via video conferencing)

There is no Programme fee for Indian Full Time Ph.D. Scholars. They are offered scholarships and financial assistance. An amount of 37,000/- P.M. + HRA for first two years and 42,000/- P.M. + HRA for remaining three years will be offered by the Institute. For continuation of scholarship in the second phase, performance evaluation will be done on half-yearly basis. The amount is subject to revision by the Institute.

Curriculum Highlights

Ph.D. Programme shall be for a minimum duration of three (3) years, including course work (two semesters), from the date of admission to the Ph.D. Programme. The broad areas in which the Institute offers admission to Ph.D. Programme (Management) are Finance, OB & HR, Strategy, Global Trade Operations and Logistics, IT Application Management, Marketing, Operations & Supply Chain Management. 

During the first year, selected scholars need to complete the coursework at the Institute covering two semesters. On successful completion of the coursework including the Seminar Paper and approval of the proposed research topic (Synopsis Confirmation), a confirmation certificate will be issued along with the name of the Ph.D. Supervisor. A three- member Doctoral Advisory Committee (DAC) will be set up for each scholar for his/her doctoral research. The scholar has to present his/ her research progress to the DAC on a regular basis. Selected scholars are required to mandatorily attend course work at IIFT during the first year of the Programme. The total course work is of 18 credit hours (1 credit hour = 10 hours) including 3 credit hours of seminar paper. The course work is divided over two semesters and will be held on weekends. Course Structure is subject to revision by the Institute’s Academic Council from time to time. In addition to the coursework, the Full Time Ph.D. Scholars at the Institute are trained in various teaching, research, and other academic activities (e.g., offering tutorials, case presentations), helping faculty in teaching and evaluations. Ph.D. students are offered scholarship by the Institute and those with JRF, are required to be involved in teaching, research, and evaluation work.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for applying to IIFT’s Ph.D. Programme (Management) are the following:

  • Candidates who have completed Master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/ 4- semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent are eligible; A candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade; or, the candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade are eligible 
  • Minimum knowledge of spoken and written English is essential. 
  • Only the candidates pursuing full time PhD are eligible for hostel accommodation
  • Candidates who are in the final year of the above mentioned degree programme are also eligible to apply
  • There is no age limit to apply

Admission Process

Application Status: Closed

  • All the eligible candidates will be called for the offline Entrance Exam. 
  • The entrance test syllabus consists of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific
  • Students who score 50% marks in the entrance test are eligible to be called for the interview.  A relaxation of 5% marks will be allowed in the entrance examination for the candidates belonging to the SC/ST/OBC/differently- abled category, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) 
  • Candidates who would qualify for the Written Entrance Test will be called for the Interview.

Exemption from Written Entrance Examination: 

  • UGC NET-JRF qualified candidates are exempted from the Written Entrance Examination. UGC NET-JRF qualified candidates will be called for the interviews on the basis of their scores in the UGC NET-JRF Exam and a separate list will be released

  • Candidates applying for Ph.D. Programme need to fill in the Application Form online and submit the same along with the application fee of 2,500/ - ( 1,250/- in respect of SC/ST/PwD candidates) 
  • The scanned copies of required documents should be attached the with application form
