The Ph.D. programme of IIM Ranchi has the objective of developing outstanding scholars for teaching or research careers at business schools/universities or management research institutions or careers in Government, industry, NGOs or for that matter any organization that requires advanced analytical and research capabilities. To accomplish this, the Ph.D. will seek to admit students who have a strong academic background, are highly motivated, and who have the intellectual curiosity to undertake original research and provide them with knowledge and research skills that can make them specialized researchers with sufficient depth of knowledge in the various existing and emerging management knowledge domains.
Ph.D. in IIM Ranchi is an academic programme, which may require a minimum of four years to complete. Students have to undertake first two years of rigorous course work, followed by at least two additional years for completing the research work with dissertation. The first year of the course work is common with IIM Ranchi’s Post Graduate Programme and is aimed at providing a participant with a broad understanding of the field of management. The Second Year of the coursework is to ensure that candidates develop deep understanding in their knowledge domain and ability to do rigorous research in their chosen area of specialization. The Area Comprehensive Examination at the end of the second year is designed to assess whether the candidate has acquired requisite level of proficiency in his/her area of specialization. In the subsequent years, the candidate works on the doctoral dissertation which is expected to be an original contribution in the area of management.

The Doctoral Programme in Management requires a minimum of four years for completion. Doctoral students must complete two years of rigorous coursework and at least two additional years dedicated to research work. The first-year coursework is common with the MBA programme. It enables the students to develop a fundamental understanding of different management areas. The second year of the coursework comprises specialised doctoral-level electives that help the students develop a deeper understanding and ability to undertake rigorous research in their chosen area of specialisation.
After completing the coursework, doctoral students must demonstrate their capability of conducting research by a Comprehensive Examination aimed at assessing the knowledge gained in the area of specialisation. In the subsequent years, the students work on their thesis, which is expected to be an original contribution to the specialized area of management. The thesis is evaluated in internal and external thesis defence.

Candidates who fulfil the above eligibility criteria can apply online. They are also required to take Common Admission Test (CAT) held by the IIMs. Alternatively, those who have qualified in GATE, GRE, GMAT and NET-JRF (UGC/CSIR) examinations can also apply in the relevant area of specialization.
Step-1: Candidates who fulfil the eligibility criteria should submit application.
Step-2: Candidates are required to take Common Admission Test (CAT) held by the IIMs. Alternatively, those who have qualified in GATE, GRE, GMAT and NET-JRF (UGC/CSIR) examinations can also apply in the relevant area of specialization. Scores of any of these examinations including CAT taken during the last two years will be considered valid for the admission in Ph.D. Candidates who have already obtained a one/two year full-time classroom-based Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) or in any specialized area of management (e.g., PGD in HRM, Agri-Business Management etc.) from any of the IIMs with a minimum CGPA of 6.5 on a 10 point scale or equivalent in last four years preceding the admission year are exempted from this requirement, and can apply directly through the prescribed Application Form.
Step-3: The candidates short-listed on the basis of their academic record and performance in the competitive examinations mentioned above will be called for a seminar and personal interview for final selection in April/May and the successful candidates will receive admission offer.
