XAT Syllabus 2025: Major Changes Announced; Check Section wise Syllabus, key changes

One of the most important MBA Entrance exams, Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) 2025 will be conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on January 5, 2024. XAT is one of the largest MBA entrance exams for admission in XLRI and 250 other top B-schools. XAT 2025 is a computer based test of three hours duration and is divided into four sections: Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning;  Decision Making; Quantitative Aptitude; General Knowledge. The descriptive Essay Writing Test is dropped for XAT 2025 exam. XLRI has announced some aspirant friendly major changes in XAT 2025 exam syllabus and has reduced the XAT exam time duration. It may be noted that Syllabus for XAT 2025 is different from XLRI syllabus. To apprise the candidates with the revised pattern and syllabus for XAT 2025 exam, XLRI is also conducting official XAT Mock Test.

1. Overview of XAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus 2025

Xavier Aptitude Test is online computer based exam conducted in a Single slot, single day. XAT Test timings are in afternoon. 

  • The GK section is not counted for percentile calculation
  • Marks for every correct answer are +1 and - 0.25 Negative Marking applies for wrong answer
  • No Negative marking for General Knowledge section in part-2 of question paper
  • All the MCQ type questions have five options with one correct option

2. Overview of XAT Syllabus and Pattern 2025

XAT exam 2025 syllabus is divided into two parts and four sections. In Part-1, it tests the candidate on Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension & Logical Reasoning; Decision Making; Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation. In part-2 it tests General Knowledge.

  • The revised XAT syllabus includes 95 MCQ type questions and No descriptive question on Essay Writing
  • Except the General Awareness Test, all the other three sections are core sections that determine the XAT percentile score as well as XLRI shortlisting criteria
  • The scores of General Awareness section is taken into account at the time of XLRI personal Interview round.
  • Essay Writing test will be conducted by XLRI in the final GD PI round

Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QADI)The questions are designed to assess the quantitative aptitude of candidates who possess a foundational understanding of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, modern maths, etc. The questions on DI are about clear interpretation, summarization, and insightful analysis of the data. Analytical Essay Writing (AEW) TestXAT 2025 will not have AEW section. This component will be conducted in XLRI GD PI round. AEW Essays should be approximately 250 words in length and must demonstrate coherence, logical consistency, and strong argumentation , serving as an assessment of the students' analytical abilities.
A: Yes, XLRI has announced many changes in XAT 2025. The Essay Writing Test is scrapped and GK questions are reduced, Exam time is reduced.
A: Yes, from the year 2024, broad syllabus for upcoming XAT exam is published. For example XLRI has outlined that GK section in XAT 2025 would consist of 8 questions on Static GK and 12 questions on Current Affairs.
A: Decision Making is considered more difficult to cover. However, it depends on your aptitude. If you have Mathematics back ground, you may find Quant and DI easier and VALR difficult, but if you have Arts/Humanities back ground, you may find VALR easier than QADI
A: If you are devoting time and studying 3-4 hours a day, 4-6 months are considered sufficient to cover the syllabus.

5. XAT Exam Syllabus 2025 for Decision Making (DM)

Decision Making (DM) is a unique section in Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) and carries a weightage of 21% in the exam. It tests you not on your ability to learn concepts or remember formulas, but on your ability to holistically view a situation and propose a solution to a problem. DM also tests you on your ethical standing and asks you to take a decision in a conflicting situation. Three different types of questions asked in Decision Making section are on Data Based Problems, Situation Based Problems and a Mixture of both type of Problems. General Knowledge section will have 20 questions in XAT 2025 exam. The score in this section is not taken into account for percentile calculation in XAT exam. 11. XAT Exam Syllabus for Analytical Essay Writing (AEW)

Essay writing is the descriptive online computer based test in XAT. This test was scrapped in 2019 but was restored in 2022. For XAT 2025, this Essay writing test is dropped again. This is the test of writing skill of an aspirant. The test requires that the test taker should write a coherent and logical essay on the given topic. The exam syllabus on Essay Writing test is not limited to any particular type of topic. Past trends in XAT reveal that it needs a well worded essay on the contemporary or abstract topic. Test taker has to write essay on one topic out of the three given topics. Essay test will be conducted by XLRI in its GD-PI round. It plays important role in the Personal Interview round as questions are based on what you have written in your Essay.

  • Focus on Situation Analysis: Understanding the motives behind the test will help you align your thinking process with the expectations of the test setter. Thus before answering a question you need to first analyse the situation from the different perspectives, i.e., the economic as well as the social perspective.
  • Frame the answer in your mind: Read, understand and try to gauge the motive behind the question. Once you have done this try to frame the answer within your mind without looking at the options, as sometimes the options can be misleading and lead you to a different outcome.
  • Eliminate incorrect options: Not all the five options are relevant. After a basic reading of the question you can start eliminating the options and in most cases, you would be able to eliminate at least two options.
